Delta of Rio Parnaíba
It is the only open sea delta in the Americas, its total area is estimated at 2,700 km2, distributed in a rectangular shape.
Where are the streams, wetlands, dunes, islands and islets. The 80 islands and islets of the Delta are located 82% in the state of Maranhão and 18% in the state of Piaui.
The mouth of the river has a delta-shaped (the Greek letter, represented by a triangle), split into 5 bars (Bahia), which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, which, from west to east, are called: Tutóia, Melancieira, Chestnut, Canary Islands, located in the state of Maranhão and Igaraçu in the state of Piaui. Other deltas in the open sea or ocean occur in estuaries Nile (Africa) and Mekong (Asia).
In the dunes, beaches, rivers and streams, the River Delta Parnaíba is formed by extensive mangrove forests. Mangroves are one of the richest ecosystems and vital to the environmental balance of the coastal zone, where marine life that feeds and reproduces.
